Asian Americans in the Military

US Armed Forces Veteran Joe Luu came to speak at the AARC today about his experiences with discrimination and stereotypes which compelled him to serve for his country. He reflected on the recent military hazing suicides and how he felt as one of the few Asian Americans in the military when he served. Discussing power relationships and respect, he acknowledged a seemingly universal system of power in which those with less power are treated as dispensable workers. By pursuing a career in stand up comedy, he feels he is speaking up for himself, his Asian American community, and giving a voice to his community.
