In 1994, my little cousin was taken out of school and although it was a little hush hush, I eventually found out that it was because of her immigration status & the new Prop 187 that had just passed in CA. to further complicate things, my cousin got pregnant and wasn’t able to see a physician out of fear of draconian reporting laws in 1987. This led to a difficult birth that was complicated by the fact that she wasn’t receiving any pre-natal care.
On the surface this sounds like just one of the many stories of people that conservatives call illegal. But to understand history is to understand the situation that creates migration and that can be tied to geopolitical events put in motion by the US Govt. What is the compensation for: creating refugees, breaking traditional cultural & familial ties, and colonization? It should at least be worth some basic healthcare… or even some basic humanity!
