On Saturday January 25th, Kai Davis–a slam poet with the Philly Youth Poetry Movement–took a break from the chilly East Coast weather to visit Claremont. Kai, who won finals at the 2011 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival as a part of Team Philly, is raw and expressive. As a queer woman of color whose work connects the personal with the political, Kai was able to make the packed room of Dom’s Lounge laugh while challenging everyone to rethink their perceptions on race, gender, and sexuality. Despite being the first Saturday of the Spring semester, many came to support the event and surprised Kai Davis with their energy and enthusiasm. The audience was treated to her poetry such as “F*ck I look like” and “Homicidal Rainbow” while also her quirky humor. #parched.
